TRENTON, N.J. – Bishop John M. Smith will ordain five men to the priesthood for service in the Diocese of Trenton during a solemn and poignant Mass and ceremony June 5, 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral.

Ordained as transitional deacons during the last year, the five men – all in their late ’20s and early ’30s — represent a range of ethnicities and places of origin. Having successfully completed their formation in divinity and systematic theology, the deacons will stand before their family members, friends and representatives of the many parish communities in which they have served as seminarians, and pledge obedience to Bishop Smith and dedication to their vocation as the newest priests of the diocese.

The ordination candidates follow.

Ricardo Benitez, 32, is a native of Colombia and one of three children of mother Bianca Lemos and stepfather Gustavo Garcia. Raised in a devout Catholic family, he was active in his home parish in Bogota but considered careers in medicine or anthropology before deciding to enter the seminary. Rev. Mr. (title given to third year seminarians upon ordination as transitional deacons) Benitez left to continue theology studies on his own in 2000 while teaching high school then college, but his interest in the priesthood was rekindled by a Colombian priest.

Encouraged to relocate to the United States in October 2006, Rev. Mr. Benitez entered Immaculate Conception Seminary, South Orange, a year later. His assignments in the Trenton Diocese include St. Anselm Parish, Wayside; St. Mary Parish, Middletown, and The Center in Asbury Park, where he ministered to and lived with people with HIV/AIDS. He was ordained a transitional deacon May 16, 2009 by Bishop John M. Smith in St. Pio Parish, Lavallette. He will serve his first priestly assignment as parochial vicar of Jesus, the Good Shepherd Parish, Riverside.

In a recent interview with The Monitor, the candidate stated, “The priesthood is a call from God … to serve him in a specific way [and minister] grace and the healing power of Christ.”

Rev. Mr. Michael J. Hall, 32, is a New Jersey native hailing from Westampton, Lawrenceville and Hamilton. The son of Dean Hall and Elizabeth Wilk, he attended public schools – graduating from Steinert High School, Hamilton Square — but was long involved with youth ministry in his home parish of St. Gregory the Great, Hamilton Square.

Rev. Mr. Hall studied biology at the University of North Carolina, then culinary arts at the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, Philadelphia. Upon his return to New Jersey and reconnection with St. Gregory Parish, Rev. Mr. Hall was asked to consider the priesthood during a youth ministry certification class. The graduate of St. Mary Seminary and University in Baltimore has served summers in Sacred Heart Parish, Trenton; St. Veronica Parish, Howell, and St. Pio of Pietrelcina, Lavallette. He was ordained a transitional deacon May 16, 2009 by Bishop John M. Smith in St. Pio Parish, Lavallette. He will serve his first priestly assignment as parochial vicar of St. Barnabas Parish, Bayville.

Rev. Mr. Hall’s circuitous route to the priesthood prompted the reflection, “This is one of those great things in life that starts off small and kept building to the point where I realized that this is where I’m called to be.”

Marcin Kania, 28, was born in Sosnowiec, an industrial hub in southern Poland, one of four children of Arkadiusz and Kyrstyna Kania. A summer youth group program kindled his interest in the priesthood; the goal stayed with him as his family migrated to the United States in his eighth grade year.

Settling in the large Polish community of St. Mary of the Lake Parish/Holy Family Mission, Lakewood, Rev. Mr. Kania completed high school studies in Manchester High School. A year at Ocean County College and various construction jobs preceded his entrance to St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook, Pa., where he earned master’s degrees in divinity and systematic theology. Summer assignments included St. Mary of the Lake Parish, Lakewood; a course of study in Spanish in Mexico; Divine Mercy Parish, Trenton, and St. Aloysius Parish, Jackson. He was ordained a transitional deacon May 16, 2009 by Bishop John M. Smith in St. Pio Parish, Lavallette. He will serve his first priestly assignment as parochial vicar of St. Leo the Great Parish, Lincroft.

Reflecting on his journey across the Atlantic to pursue the priesthood, Rev. Mr. Kania explained, “We need everybody in the boat steering for the Church. We need everyone’s skills and talents as we set out to evangelize and bring others to Christ.”

Roberto Carlos Padilla, 30, is one of four children born to Manuel de Jesus Padilla Cera and Teresa de Jesus Lopez de Padilla and a native of Sabanalarga, Colombia. After earning a degree in philosophy, he graduated from the Pontifica Universidad Javeriana, a centuries-old traditional Colombian university directed by the Society of Jesus, in 2004.

At the invitation of Trenton Diocese priest Father Javier Diaz, Rev. Mr. Padilla answered his life-long call to religious life, moved to the United States and entered Immaculate Conception Seminary at Seton Hall University, South Orange, where he will graduate with master’s degrees in divinity and systematic theology. Rev. Mr. Padilla has served summers in St. Catharine Parish, Holmdel, and St. James Parish, Red Bank. He was ordained a transitional deacon May 16, 2009 by Bishop John M. Smith in St. Pio Parish, Lavallette. He will serve his first priestly assignment as parochial vicar of Our Lady of the Angels Parish, Trenton.

Most excited about celebrating the Eucharist, Padilla told The Monitor, “I want to give that love of the bread and wine to the people.”

Matthew L. Riedlinger, 27, is a native of Upper Sandusky, Ohio, and one of three children born to Lynn and Julie Riedlinger. A product of Catholic schooling by the Sisters of Mercy, Riedlinger attended The Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. to study philosophy. There, he made the acquaintance of National Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception rector Msgr. Walter Rossi, who recommended his move to the Trenton Diocese.

Rev. Mr. Riedlinger completed his seminarian studies and will receive a master of divinity degree from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, Overbrook, Pa. Summer assignments included Sacred Heart Parish, Trenton; St. Catharine and St. Margaret, Spring Lake, and St. Barnabas, Bayville. He was ordained a transitional deacon in his home parish in Upper Sandusky by Bishop Smith. He will serve his first priestly assignment as parochial vicar of St. Aloysius Parish, Jackson.

“For me, the priesthood is about helping people to come to know Jesus Christ and to love him,” Rev. Mr. Riedlinger recently told The Monitor. “That’s why I’m becoming a priest – to spread the Gospel message.”

What is a Coadjutor?

A bishop appointed to a Catholic diocese or archdiocese to assist the diocesan bishop. Unlike an auxiliary bishop, he has the right of succession, meaning that he automatically becomes the new bishop when the diocesan bishop retires or dies. By canon law, he is also vicar general of the diocese. In recent years, a growing number of U.S. bishops in larger dioceses or archdioceses have requested and received a coadjutor in their final year or two before their retirement, in order to familiarize their successor with the workings of the (arch)diocese before he has to take over the reins. This minimizes the learning curve of a new bishop and eliminates completely the possibility of the diocese being vacant following the current bishop’s retirement.
